Captain William Lewis, II

Came over from England in the Lion, arrived at Boston, Sept. 16, 1632, was admitted freeman Nov. 6, 1632, belonged to the Braintree company, which in Aug. 1633, rem. from Braintree to Cambridge. He was in 1636 one of the earliest settlers of Hartford, and subsequently a founder of Hadley, and representative for Hadley, 1662, and for Northampton, 1664. Prior to Nov. 29, 1677, he had removed to Farmington, Ct.

Arrived at Boston Sep. 16, 1632 aboard the 'Lyon.' Admitted freeman at Boston Nov. 6, 1632. Settled first and Newton (now Cambridge), MA, and then removed to Hartford, Hartford Co., CT in 1636, and to Hadley, Hampshire Co., MA in 1659.

His name appears on Hartford's Founders Monument.

William Lewis came in the "Lion" to Boston arriving September 16, 1632. He settled in Cambridge, MA, and was admitted freeman November 6, 1632. He removed to Hartford, CT in 1636 and was one of the original proprietors there, was selectman in 1641. About 1659 he removed to Hadley, where he served as deputy to the Massachusetts General Court in 1662, and he was deputy from North Hampton in 1664. His wife Felix died at Hadley in 1671 and about four years lated he removed to Farmington, CT where he died in 1683. In May 1675 he received a grant of 200 acres from Connecticut Colony, 100 acres of which he recorded to his grandson, Philip Lewis.

William had a sister, Ann, who married a Staines and came to this country about 1642. They returned to England, and in 1649 William Lewis went to England, and finding her in staightened circumstances, paid her passage and she returned to New England dieing at Farmington between December 24, 1670, and January 26, 1675 - 6. She left the residue of her estate to Lt. William Lewis (son of William Sr), and her brother, William Lewis Sr presented an account for sums he had paid out on his sister's behalf.

William's will, dated August 30, 1683, refers to himself as stricken in years and gave his then remaining property to specified grandchildren, who were all children of his son William.

He belonged to the Braintree company which in August, 1632, removed from Braintree to Cambridge; admitted freeman November 6, 1632; removed to Hartford, one of the original proprietors here; his home-lot in 1639 was on Main St., next south of John Talcott's; he was juror in 1642; townsman, 1641; removed about 1659 to Hadley; rep. for Hadley, 1662, and for Northampton, 1664. His wife, Felix, died in Hadley, April 17, 1671. Prior to November 29, 1677, he had removed to Farmington, where he died August 2, 1683.
