Carel Lodewijk Willem (Carel) Wirtz ( The Hague , 1 September 1841 - Breda , 12 September 1935 ) was a Dutch pianist.

Life and work. Wirtz was a son of the piano teacher Friedrich Johann Xavier Wirtz and Carolina Jacoba van Hove. He married Maria Cornelia Vogelzang in 1868. After her death he remarried Maria Adriana Paulez in 1871.

Wirtz received his first music lessons from his father, a teacher at the Hague music school . This was followed by Johann Lübeck (music theory), Charles van der Does (piano) and Willem Nicolaï (organ). He studied from 1851 to 1859, but already in 1855 his first public performance took place in The Hague. He then played the Piano Concerto in g minor by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy . He was allowed to continue performing later in the rest of the Netherlands and also at the Dutch Court. In his last year as a "student" he was also a teacher at the same music school (1858-1864). In 1857 he had also started as a permanent organist of the St. James Churchfrom The Hague and resumed later until 1875 as conductor of the choir of that same church. In 1874 he had already taken over the position of Charles van der Does at the conservatory. In 1886 he came back as director to promote the music of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina . From 1891 to 1895 he was affiliated with the Muziekschool der Toonkunst in Utrecht . In the same period he performed regularly with the violinist of the Concertgebouw Orchestra Christiaan Timmner , performing all sonatas for violin and piano by Ludwig van Beethoven . In that context, the duo performed on 23 February 1893 in De Harmonie in Leeuwarden. In 1900 he was appointed Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau . He was then a teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague. In 1917 he retired from the active music world.

Wirtz died at the age of 94 in Breda.

Gottfried Mann , Willem Andriessen, Anny Mesritz-van Velthuysen and Cornelie van Oosterzee were among his students.

Carel Wirtz was born in The Hague and received his first music education from his father Friedrich Wirtz, teacher at the Royal Music and Singing School. He continued his education in The Hague with Johann Lübeck, Charles van der Does and Willem Nicolai. Wirtz performed in public at an early age; in 1857 he was appointed as organist of St. Jacob's Church. In the following year he succeeded his father as a teacher, and in 1874 his teacher Van der Does. In addition, he led the choir of St. Jacob's Church, and for a number of years was a lecturer at the Toonkunst Music School in Utrecht. As a composer Wirtz wrote mainly religious choral works.
