About Caroline Elizabeth Campbell

Caroline Elizabeth Hubbard was born March 16, 1842, in Lapeer, Michigan, to Tilla (or Tilly) Hubbard and Huldah Theodosia Parrish. Her father, Tilla, passed away when she was just four years old and he was 54 years old. She and her mother and sisters migrated from Michigan in 1849 for Council Bluffs. Caroline crossed the plains with the Thomas C.D. Howell 1852 Company of Latter-Day Saints in which 293 individuals plus 10 families and about 65 wagons made up the company when it began its journey from Kanesville, Iowa (present day Council Bluffs). She traveled in that company along with her mother, Hulda, and sisters Phoebe Augusta, 12, and Victoria Ladosha, 8. They departed Iowa on June 7, and arrived around the end of September in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Caroline married Grant Campbell as his plural wife in Salt Lake City on Christmas Day, 1857 when she was only 15 years old and Grant was 30, twice her age!. He was born June 7, 1828, in Ridgebury, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Grant's first wife, Mary Ellen, was 27 years old at the time, and they already had four children. Grant and Caroline go on to have seventeen children of their own and also adopt several others.

In the 1860 U.S. Federal Census for Weber, Utah Territory, Caroline and Grant were living with their first son, George Grant., age 10 months, and next door is Mary Ellen Campbell, 30, Grant's first wife, and she has the following children: John Henry, 12, Jarad E., 6, Phebe E., 4, Mercy A., 2, and Leovina C., 3 months old. Grant is working as a farmer and his real estate is valued at $1,000 and his personal estate at $300. Another daughter, Mary Elizabeth, was born to Grant and Caroline, November 11, 1861, in North Ogden, Utah, but she passed away two months after her first birthday on January 11, 1863.

By the 1870 census, the family is living in Montpelier, Bear Valley, Idaho, and in this census, Grant is listed as John. He is 42, Caroline is 27, their oldest son, George, is 11, and they now have 4 more children, Manda (real name Amanda Theodocia), 7, Ezra T., 5, Rosetta, 2, and Victoria, who was born December 17, 1869, but passes away less than two weeks later on December 31st. In this census, Grant's personal estate is valued at $500. Mary Ellen is 37, John is 18, (Jarad) Edward is 16, Phebe E. is 14, Mercy J., 12, Sarah J. is 10, and Lavah E., is 9. Grant is still a farmer. Grant Campbell buried his first wife, Mary Ellen Hauk (Hawk) in Montpelier, Idaho, in 1871.

Five more children are born to Grant and Caroline in the 1870's, Chester Fredrick, born in 1871, Adelbert, who was born in December, 1872, but passed away in January of 1873, Carrie Caroline, in 1874, who died in 1891, Effie Ann, born in 1877, and Olive Vilate, 1879, the last two girls living to adulthood.

In the 1880 census, Grant and Caroline are 52 and 37, and their children are listed as Theodocia (Amanda), 16, Ezra Tilby, 14, Rosette, 12, Caroline C., 6, Chester, 9, Effie Ann., 2, and Olive V., 9 months old. Grant is working as a laborer now instead of a farmer. They are still living in Montpelier, Idaho. They continue to have six more children in the next seven years, William Elmer in 1880, Lila May in 1883, Lunette Ivy in 1883, Phoebe Idella in 1886, who died in 1888, Ira Rupert, born in July of 1888, who died in September that year, and Geneva Verdine in 1889.

Nine years later, Caroline Elizabeth Hubbard Campbell passes away on Mary 14, 1898, at the fairly young age of 56, and is buried in Fairview, Lincoln County, Wyoming. Grant lives another 17 years without Caroline, and passes away in Lewiston, Utah, in 1915, when he was 86 years old. He had been living with his married daughter, Rosetta Almeda Campbell Harmon and her husband, William Ammon Harmon, and their children in the 1910 census. Although a sketch of his life shown on Grant Campbell's profile page indicates that his oldest son with Mary Ellen, John Henry, took care of Grant just before he passed away in 1915.
