Catharine "Catey" (Hess) Howery was born circa 1790 in Bedford County, Virginia, United States. Her parents were Henry Hess and Margaret (Fisher) Hess.

Catharine married Jacob Howery on July 27, 1814 in Bedford Co, Virginia. Together they had the following children: Unknown Howery; Jacob Howery; James B. Howery; Thomas Howery; Allen Howery; John Howery; Samuel Howery; Davidson Charles Howery; Unknown Howery; Charles Dellington Howery; Unknown Howery; David Howery.

She died on June 29, 1864 in Cross Plains, Dane County, Wisconsin, United States and was buried in Howery Cemetery, Cross Plains, Dane Co, Wisconsin.



Her marriage date is also given as 17 July 1815 in Montgomery County. Her husband drowned in the Ohio River. She appears as a widow on the 1840 census of Tazewell County, Virginia. In the spring of 1845 she moved to Wisconsin with her sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Phillip Howery, and with her grown children. The families travelled from Tazewell County, Virginia via St. Louis, then up the Mississippi and Fever Rivers to Galena, Illinois, then were driven overland to Cross Plains, Wisconsin. They settled in a group of Howery cabins on a road running north and south.
