About Catherine Margaretha Cain
One of the lamentable results of the information age and the internet is that there is too much information. Another result is that much of it is unreliable. How this relates to genealogy specifically is the increasing use of "copy and paste" by casual tree builders who have no regard for the genealogical proof standard and actually do not know such a thing exists. Then they wonder why their tree is full of contradictory and confusing information that is impossible to reconcile. In the early era of computers there was a mantra, "garbage in, garbage out." Take heed lazy tree copiers. What frequently happens in the 18th century, and is the case for two women named Catherine, one with no known beginning and one with no known ending, is that the two halves get stuck together for no other reason than they "fit.". The Catherine on this profile has no known death date or place. What likely happened to her is anybody's guess, but the most reasonable explanation is that her records were lost because of the death of her husband and her father in the same year. At her age, she may not have married again and may have lived with a relative and died in Germany. There are other less likely possibilities, but a concurrent marriage in America is not one of them. The sourced information provided here on this profile, and also on her FamilySearch profile, should make it obvious that this Catherine and Catherine Cain (formerly Unknown), who has no known beginning, are not the same person and this Catherine, who married in 1740 in Germany could not have also married Nicholas Cain in 1736 in Pennsylvania. Another probable exacerbating circumstance is that the husband of Catherine Unknown, Nicholas Cain, has been confused and combined with at least two other men with similar names.
