CHESTERTOWN - Catherine Margaret Jones died peacefully at home in Chestertown on Dec. 20, 2018 surrounded by the support of her loving family and caregivers. She was 87 years old.
She is survived by her children, daughter Kathleen and her husband Rob, son Patrick and his wife Kiki, daughter Karen and her husband Kip and daughter-in-law Gina;
Grandchildren Meg, Elizabeth, Alex, Maggie, Jakob, Nickolas, Justine and Kevin; great-grandchild Liza; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Alexander ("Sandy") Jones and their son Peyton. She also is survived by her companion caregiver Bernadine.
Catherine McGoohan was born in 1931 in County Leitrim, Ireland, one of five children of the late Thomas McGoohan and Rose Fitzpatrick McGoohan. The family emigrated to Yorkshire, England, when she was a young child.
She was preceded in death by her brother Patrick and sisters Patricia and Marie.
She is survived by her sister Annette.
Catherine McGoohan graduated from the University of Sheffield in 1952 with an honors degree in history. While at the university, she met Alexander Jones of Princess Anne, Md., who was studying there as a Fulbright Scholar after graduation from Washington College. The couple was married in 1952 in Kenilworth, England.
Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Jones moved to Baltimore, where Mrs. Jones taught at the School of the Chimes while her husband attended the University of Maryland School of Law. They moved to Princess Anne in 1955 when her husband joined his father in the law firm of Jones and Jones.
While rearing a family of four children, Mrs. Jones became active as a volunteer with civic organizations, including Somerset County educational programs for pre-school children, children of migrant workers and children with developmental special needs.
She was a member of the Citizens' Advisory Board of the Eastern Shore Hospital Center and the Chancellor's Advisory Board of the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore.
Mrs. Jones received her master's degree in special education from Salisbury State University in 1977. She was employed by Somerset County Public Schools as a special education teacher at Woodson Middle School in Crisfield and as a visiting resource teacher to Smith Island's School at Ewell until her retirement in 1986.
Mrs. Jones and her husband lived in Princess Anne for 30 years, where they raised their family, before retiring to Chestertown in 1986.
Mrs. Jones continued her civic service in local community organizations in Kent County. She served on the board of Kent Youth for several years. She was a volunteer with the Kent Hospice Foundation and was a member of its Ethics Committee.
After the death of her husband in 2009, Mrs. Jones lived a secluded life as her health declined. She enjoyed spending time with her loving family in her home with the support of her devoted caregiver.
