About Cecil Mary, Viscountess Craigavon, DBE
Much like her husband, Northern Ireland’s First Prime Minister Sir James Craig, Lady Cecil Craig took
a keen interest in politics. She was a founder of the Ulster Women’s Unionist Council (UWUC), which by 1912'was the largest women’s political organisation in Ireland’ with up to 200,000 members.
Viscountess Craigavon was very involved in charitable work in Northern Ireland, including in North
Belfast, where she reopened Donegall Street Congregational Church (now known as Redeemer
Central) in 1934 after it was damaged by a fire in 1931.
