Celestina "Sally" Walters, 86, of Hays, died Monday, May 9, at St. John's of Victoria Nursing Home.
She was born July 14, 1918, in Victoria, the daughter of Peter and Catherine (Younger) Hertel. She was a waitress for many years at Dan's Cafe in Hays. She was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, Eagle's Auxiliary, and the VFW Auxiliary, all of Hays.
She married Fidelis A. "Red" Walters on Sept. 5, 1939. He preceded her in death on Aug. 5, 1977.
Survivors include a son, Richard Walters and wife Gloria of Hays; four daughters, Erma Verhage and husband Lloyd of Manhattan, Luci Sullivan and husband Terry of Pittsburg, Carol Rupp of Winfield, and Iris Lang of husband Lloyd of Victoria; a sister, Bernice Hillman of Cawker City; 16 grandchildren; four step grandchildren; and 17 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Alvin, and Ralph Hertel; two sisters, Marcella Hertel and Felicitas Dinkel; and one great grandchild.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Thursday, at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery in Hays. There will be an Eagles Auxiliary service at 5:30 p.m., a Daughters of Isabella rosary at 6 p.m., and a parish service at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine, in Hays. Friends may call at the funeral home from 3 until 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. Thursday.
A memorial has been established with St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Manhattan.
