Missionary of the American Home Missionary Society. Organizer and minister, first Presbyterian Church of Chicago. Chaplain, United States Army for seventeen years. First Chaplain, Fort Dearborn, Chicago. Co-Founder of Beloit College, Beloit, Wisconsin. Pastor of the Presbyterian Church, Peoria, Illinois. Pastor at Prairie Du Chien, WI and Green Bay, WI. He served as the chaplain of the 1st Illinois Light Artillery during the Civil War.
Married 15 June 1835 to Eliza Emily Chappell, of Rochester, NY, daughter of Lieut. Robert Chappell and Elizabeth Kneeland. Nine children of which four survived to adulthood. Two children, Rev. Henry Dwight Porter and Mary Porter were missionaries in China.
