About Charles Ashton, of Westmoreland County

Evidence needed to support as husband of Frances Ashton

Charles Ashton married at least three times.

  1. He married, as his 1st, to Unknown Burdett, possibly a daughter of Thomas Burdett of Charles County. (the Burdett name was given many times in the family).[2] This first wife died before 1696.[2]
  2. He married c. 1699, as his 2nd, to Ann (Wickliffe) Washington, widow of John II Washington. Ann died by August 31, 1704, in Westmoreland Co., VA. She is buried in the Washington family plot at the George Washington Birthplace National Monument, with her husband, John II Washington.[2] Charles and Ann had no children.[2]
  3. He married on 10 July 1706, as his 3rd, to Margaret (Field) Cossum Hart, widow of 1) Henry Cossum, 2) Edward Hart (d 1703). Margaret and Edward Hart had two daughters: Margaret and Elizabeth Hart.[2]

Children of Charles Ashton and Frances Burdett:

  1. Burdett Ashton (1675-1745). Married Married Washington.
  2. Charles Burdett (1679-1724). Married Margaret Hart.

Probably had other children.

Disambiguation

The Charles Ashton of Northumberland is a totally different man from the Charles who was the son of John Ashton of Westmoreland. He was 40 years old in 1655. He was a contemporary of John Ashton who was the father of the Charles of this profile. Just to make life more confusing, Northumberland Charles had a son named John Ashton who was probably born about 1645. It's possible that the older Charles and John were brothers, but impossible that they were father and son.
