Charles Plover Bell, Sr. was the fourth of fifteen children born to James Gordon Bell and Laura Clementine Thompson of Attala, Mississippi.

On January 7, 1912, he married Lucy Love Leonard, daughter of Jeff N. Leonard and Fannie Brunt. They settled on a farm near Ethel and were the parents of seven children: Lucille, Laura, Gordon, Charlene, Leonard, Charles Jr., and Lucy Jean. The four living children as of 2008, still live near Ethel, are members of Ethel Baptist Church, and all of the children of Charlie and Lucy Bell have raised fine families of their own.
