Charles was born on board SS Berhampore off Onehunga Bar, in 1849. After leaving school, he served as a despatch rider for Colonel Whitmore at outbreak of New Zealand Wars. He was present at the seige of Parihaka. Held Maori War medal. Later joined police force as a mounted constable. He as an escort during the 1901 Royal Tour of the Duke & Duchess of York. A first class bowler, Charles won the East Coast Championships in 1917 and was also a NZ Champion in rifle shooting.
