About Charles Mercer Brown
He lived for four or five years with Thomas Protzman and went to school at Easton, W.Va. Then he went to school in Kingwood and in Charles Town. A lawyer, Harrisville, Ritchie Co. WV.who died at the age of 32 from hemorrhage of lungs. politically he voted Democratic and was Presbyterian, Occupation Attorney. Charles was a graduate of law for Washington College, Lexington VA which later became Washington and Lee College. He received 1/2 of the original "Stone House" from his grandfather, along with his 5 brothers and sisters. Lawyer, Harrisville, Ritchie Co., WV at time of death. Death by hemorrhage of lungs. Charles was the son of Thomas Francis and Elizabeth Zinn Brown. His brothers were: Buckner Beverly, William T. and Virgil S. Brown. His sisters were: Chloe N. Brown and Adaline Brown (Morgan).
Charles was the husband of Harriet Virginia Carolina Fairfax. His tombstone reads he was 31 years, 9 months, and 24 days old at time of death. Genealogy of the Brown Family" by James Edgar Brown, Chicago, 1898; p. 101
"Charles Mercer Brown, the fourth child of Thomas Francis Brown and Elizabeth (Zinn) Brown, was born Jan. 29, 1837, and on Feb. 22, 1861, married Harriet Virginia Fairfax... Charles Mercer was a bright, energetic and successful lawyer, engaged in the active practice of his profession at Harrisville, Ritchie County, West Va., at the time of his death, which occured Nov. 26, 1868, occasioned by a hemorrhage of the lungs, produced by contracting a severe cold." Brown source, p. 62: Charles is buried, along with his sister's Chloe and Adaline Brown Morgan, at Independence, Preston County, West Virginia. Charles is mentioned in Oren Morten's book on page 796 - 797. Burial: Hardman Cemetery Hardman Preston County West Virginia, USA He was a Democrat, and was a Presbyterian.
