Charles Franklin Burkhalter

The following is extracted from his obituary, in the Monitor-Index and Democrat of Moberly, Feb. 11, 1934:

Dr. Charles Franklin Burkhalter was a practicing physician at the age of 70, when he died of pneumonia after trying to extract his stuck car from a mudhole after visiting a patient while he was suffering from a deep cold himself.

He was born in Coopersburg, Pa., October 28, 1867, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Burkhalter. His parents moved to St. Louis in 1875 and a year later to a farm near Wellsville, where he was reared. He graduated from Washington University School of Medicine in 1895, practiced three years at Vandalia, and then moved to Higbee.

He was first married in 1895 to Miss Florence Stewart of Wellsville, and then to Mrs. Mabel Turner. He was a member of the Methodist Church, South, the Knights of Pythias, the Modern Woodmen of America, and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Besides his widow he was survived by four of his five daughters, two brothers, and his mother, Mrs. Amanda Burkhalter.
