Charles Dean was born in 1720 in Rockingham, North Carolina, the son of unknown parents.

Charles married Ursula Marchbanks. They had at least the following children:

  1. Joel Dean,
  2. Elisha Dean Sr,
  3. Charles Dean Jr.

After Charles died in Rockingham County, North Carolina in 1798, Ursula and some of their children moved to Spartanburg County, South Carolina in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Information about Charles’ land transactions is found at Charles M. Dean Documents. Ursula’s maiden name was Marchbanks. Her Mother was Anne Echols who married George Marchbanks. Anne was Elizabeth Eleanor Echols’ sister and aunt to Keziah Dean who married Edward’s oldest son John Dean. The Deans, Echols, and Abneys all lived together and intermarried for many years. Many of the Deans, Abneys and Echols also moved to the Edgefield County, South Carolina area.
