About Charles Herbert Martin

  • In Vivian Martin's marriage record with Arthur Hiram Samuels, her father was named "C. Herbert Martin". See "New York, New York City Marriage Records, 1829-1940," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:247L-3ZT : 10 February 2018), Arthur Samuels and Vivian Martin Samuels, 28 Feb 1926; citing Marriage, Manhattan, New York, New York, United States, New York City Municipal Archives, New York; FHL microfilm 1,643,642.
  • In Vivian's birth record on 22 July 1891 in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan, her father is named as Charles H. Martin. See "Michigan Births, 1867-1902," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NQDB-FR2 : 10 March 2018), Vivian L Martin, 22 Jul 1891; citing item 2 p 271 rn 5679, Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan, Department of Vital Records, Lansing; FHL microfilm 2,321,270. It is assumed that C. Herbert Martin and Charles H. Martin were the same man.
  • On 26 September 1924, a man named Charles Herbert Martin applied for a passport to visit England and France. He stated, in his four-page passport application form, that:
    • He had been born in Greenville, [Montcalm County], Michigan on 17 August 1869.
    • He was the son of Charles Marion Martin, who was born in Portage Bridge, New York.
    • He resided at the Green Room Club, at 48th Street in Manhattan [for background information, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Room_Club_(New_York_City)]
    • He was an actor.
    • He intended to depart for Europe on the ship Orca on 4 October 1924.
    • He was 5-feet, 11-inches tall, had blue eyes, a straight nose, gray hair, a dark complexion, an oval face, and was 55 years old.
  • On 23 October 1924, a woman named Grace Gibbs Martin applied for a passport, in order to visit France, England, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Holland, and Belgium. She stated, in her passport application (see "United States Passport Applications, 1795-1925," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QV5Y-4P4V : 16 March 2018), Charles Herbert Martin in entry for Grace Gibbs Martin, 1924; citing Passport Application, New York, United States, source certificate #485871, Passport Applications, January 2, 1906 - March 31, 1925, 2657, NARA microfilm publications M1490 and M1372 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), that:
    • She had been born in Reed City, [Osceola County], Michigan on 17 January 1872.
    • Her husband's name was Charles Herbert Martin, born in Greenville, Michigan, and who was now residing in London, England.
    • Her permanent address was 5444 Fountain Avenue in Hollywood, California.
    • She was 5-feet, 4-inches tall, had gray eyes, gray hair, a small nose, a fair complexion, an oval face, and was 52 years old.
    • The person who vouched for the identity of Grace Gibbs Martin was Vivian Martin, who also resided at 5444 Fountain Avenue in Hollywood, California; who had known Grace Gibbs Martin for 24 years; and who was an actress.
    • Oddly, the photograph of Grace Gibbs Martin on the passport application form was mostly concealed by a sheet of white paper. This white paper covers the face of Grace Gibbs Martin (it shows her only from the neck down).
  • On the marriage record of Vivian Martin to Arthur Hiram Samuels on 28 February 1926, Vivian's mother was named as "G.... Gibbs". From her passport application in October 1924, it is evident that her full name was Grace Gibbs, and that Grace Gibbs was the mother of Vivian Martin.
