About Charles McAlister, Mr
Charlie worked as a cycle mechanic and was a professional bike rider. He also worked as cane furniture maker and Bar Manager in a Ch-Ch hotel before purchasing a 7 day a week grocery store at 11 Cranford St St Albans. During the time at Cranford St and later at their fruit shop Charlie taught his son Barry the benefits of having a strong work ethic.
After selling the Cranford St store Charlie purchased the “Fruit Bowl” on the corner of Wharenui Rd and Riccarton Rd. He developed this Dairy into a high end fruit and vegetable shop and became known as a Greengrocer of note in Christchurch. At the markets he was dubbed 'two bob Charlie' due to opening each one of his bids at 2 bob (shillings).
With the introduction of chain stores and failing health Charlie sold the fruit shop and purchased a 6 day a week convenience store in Carlton Mill Rd Carlton Mill. During this time Charlie succumbed to cancer and after 2 years of great suffering he passed away on Thursday morning the 9th of August 1962 aged just 48. It seems ironic that his grandfather James died aged 41, his father Stanley (Silas) died aged 27 when Charlie was 1 year old.
The family have remained forever grateful for the help and caring of Lily’s brothers and sisters who rallied around her during what was a devastating time for her.
His son recalls two pieces of advise Charlie gave him that are printable......(1) “working hard" would get you nowhere, if you want to get ahead in life "work smart" but just remember" it's smart to work hard when the occasion arises. (2) Be a leader...never be led.
Charles is buried with his mother Ellen Maude (nee Walls) in the Ruru Lawn cemetery block 9 plot 77.
