29 March 1474: Transumpt of a charter by King Robert I in favour of Malcolm, Earl of Lennox and his heirs of the Earldom of Levenax [Lennox] and sheriffdom of Dumbrettane [Dumbarton] with its castle which King Alexander had formerly granted to Maldouen, Earl of Levenax, predecessor of this Malcolm, which Earldom and sheriffdom with its castle are to be held by Malcolm and his heirs with the customary rights and duties as granted to his predecessor, from Easter Douglas to Sehynne, from Sehynne to Keryn, descending to the water called Gall and from Gall to Fynnovhyn, descending to the Forth, from Fynnovhyn to the east march of Cramenane, from that march to the stream called Melach and then to Keryn, with the customary liberties of the whole said Earldom of Lennox and sheriffdom of Dumbarton with its castle, and with free forest, making service equivalent to ten complete touns in armies and aids as customarily required by the King; if the sheriffdom and castle of Dumbarton are retained against the earl's will, the king will pay the earl 500 merks sterling out of the customs annually. Done at Craganys in the hall of the said William's dwelling in presence of John Cunyngham, James Hayr of Pennold and others.
