About Charles S. Sergeant
Charles Sergeant (Linda H. Davis reported in "Onward and Upward," 1989, biography of Charles Sergeant's daughter Katharine Sergeant Angell White) had two sisters, each of whom were among the first to graduate from Smith. Charles Sergeant endured a heavy dose of Congregationalist Puritanism as a boy, and that’s where the church’s influence ended in his line. He was the third of seven children (another child was Miss Helen C. Sergeant, born in MA, and whose lineage is described in Lineage Book, Volume 13, Northampton, MA, published in 1893/1901 by The Daughters of the American Revolution, Harrisburg, PA: Harrisburg Publishing Company, as downloaded in 2010 from a scan by Google) of a Northampton, MA, grain merchant, George Sergeant, and Lydia Ann Clark, daughter of the editor of the Hartford Courant. Charles Sergeant graduated from Northampton High School in 1868.
