About Charles Scott, SV/PROG
Charles was the second of 8 children, namely Eliza, Arthur, Elia, Harriet, Henry, James and David.
It is believed that Charles worked for his father at his stables. He arrived at the Cape in approx 1845. Charles worked as a clerk & later as shopkeeper, for “BARRY & NEPHEWS” in their trading store in Swellendam , where he must have met his wife, Appeline. He was listed as Shopkeeper and later as Toll keeper, at their home, “The Toll House” at Buffelsjachtsrivier, near Swellendam. He died at the old thatched Toll House which is situated on the eastern bank of the river near the old wooden bridge which was built in 1852 . The piers are of dressed stone and the bridge floor of wooden beams.
