1841 census: living in Smiddyhill, Longformacus, Berwickshire, with wife and 2 children.

1851 census: age 39, a carrier at Dicks Hall, Longformacus, with wife and 4 children.

1861 census: age 45?, labourer in New Monkland, Lanarkshire - all family except Margaret moved there.

1861: Eldest daughter Margaret married Alexander Shiell at New Monkland. Decribed as tenant farmer on marriage entry.

1871, age 57, a carter, living at 30 Garscube Lane, Glasgow Barony, with wife Alison and son John and daughter Isabella.

1881, age 68, a railway carter, living at 29 Cowcaddens Street, Glasgow Barony, with wife Alison and a lodger.

1888: widowed when wife Alison dies.

1891: living with widowed daughter Isabell and family at 22 Garscadden Street, Glasgow.

Died 28/11/1898, at City Road, Glasgow, aged 87. Described as a carter.
