About Charles "Vergil" Helmick

C.V. “Vergil” Helmick, age 90, of Hinkleville, died Monday, May 21, 2018, at his home. He was born May 22, 1927, at Pleasant Ridge, Upshur County, a son of the late Ralph Cleveland and Mildred Mona Roby Helmick. On October 14, 1947, he was united in marriage to Doris Marie Hamner Helmick, who preceded him in death on November 14, 2010. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was also preceded in death by seven siblings: Carl, Clyde, Creed, Cletha, Wanna, Bertha, and Ruth. He is survived by one son Charlie Helmick and wife Jane of Buckhannon; seven daughters: Becky and husband Jack Judy of Elkins, Millie and husband Randy Calkins of Hinkleville, Kathy and husband Sam Garrett of Camden, Mary Ann and husband Wayne Miller of Buckhannon, Linda and husband Joe Coffman of French Creek, Joyce Lesondak of Buckhannon, and Jean Wright of Buckhannon; thirteen grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Vergil was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and had been a member of the Upshur County Livestock Association for 54 years, the WV Farm Bureau for 54 years, was a lifetime member and longest senior current member of the B.P.O.E. (Elks) Buckhannon Lodge #1736, and the VFW. He began his livestock dealer career in 1943 and became the owner and operator of the Gassaway Stockyards and the Buckhannon Stockyards where he retired in 1992. However, he still attended every Wednesday’s sale up until failing health a few months ago. The family would like to extend thanks to Vergil’s very special friend Alvie Ratliff, caregiver Jenny Reed, and Dr. Ali Khan, Teresa, and staff. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 24, 2018, from 3-8:00 PM, at the Good Hope Tabernacle Church. The funeral will be held on Friday, May 25, 2018, at 11:00 AM, at the Good Hope Tabernacle Church with Pastors Wease Day and Dennis Estes officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Olive Cemetery at Hinkleville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 417005 Boston, MA 02241-7005, www.heart.org or the American Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601, www.alz.org in memory of Vergil’s wife Doris.
