Prominent Manufacturer Dead in Waterbury
Waterbury, July 19 - Chauncey Porter Goss, 80 years old, one of Waterbury's most prominent citizens, died today at his home, 117 Pine Street. He was for many years prominently connected with the ownership of the Scovill Manufacturing Company, entering its office in 1862 as office boy and assistant bookkeeper, becoming bookkeeper the same year, being chosen secretary in 1864, filling this place 'til 1869, adding the duties of treasurer in 1868, and in 1900 being chosen president; holding the office of president and treasurer until his death.
He had at all times stood for whatever made for progress in the community, and was active in the First Congregational Church, of which he was a member. Of late years, he had spent much time in Aiken, South Carolina. He leaves four sons:
- 1. Edward O.
- 2. John H.
- 3. Chauncey P.
- 4. George A., all of whom are connected wit the Scovill Mfg. Co., in official capacities; and two daughters:
- 1. Mrs. W. Kelley-Patterson of Great Britain, and
- 2. Mrs Hugh L. Thompson of Waterbury.
Mrs Goss died in 1915. Mr. Goss was a native of Pittsford, New York. One of his sons, George, is now in France as a captain in an ordinance corps of the United States Army.
