About Chloe Strong (Richmond)

Obituary From the Western Spy on 13 January 1821:

"Though some weeks have elapsed since the death of that mother in Israel, Mrs. Chloe Strong, yet we think it proper by this short note to redeem from forgetfulmess the memory of the just. Mrs. Strong possessed a strong and active mind, which continued unimpaired to the last. Age, that had marked its progress on her person and health, left no traces on her intellectual faculties unless th4ey were those of knowledge, matured by experience, and piety confirmed by habvit. In disposition she was benevolent, in religion sincere, faithful in friendship, and affectionate as a relative. In the course of seventy-three years, she had seen much of the world, and experienced many of the diversities of human life. The part she had to act was often trying and critical, but the soundness of her principles, and correctness of her judgment, enabled her to maintain her place with firmness and quit it with approbation. Though Mrs. Strong had ever been conscientious in her conduct and had experienced when about 30 years of age, that change of heart which the Gospel requires, yet it was not till the latter years of her life that she devoted herself entirely in the interests of religion. In devotion, and the public and private duties and exercises of piety, she found comfort which the world could never afford. In possession of that peace which none but God can give, she passed the days of declining life, received the approaches of the King of Terrors without dismay, and on the night of Saturday, Nov,. 11, 1820, reigned her immortal spirit into the hands of her Saviour and her God. She lived respected by all, and the sorrow felt at her departure was softened by hope, and relieved by a well-grounded confidence, that she rests from her labors from henceforth, and is gone to the possessuion of that exceeding and eternal weight of glory that awaits the righteous at the termination of the light afflictions of this present life. On Monday, the 13th, her funeral was attended by a respectable number of friends and acquaintances, on which occasion a sermon was delivered by the Rev. J. Collins and about 4 o'clock in the afternoon, her remains were interred in the Methodist burying ground of this city, there to rest till the morning of the resurrection."
