Christian Schumacher was born May 31,1829 in Eppingen, Baden Germany, and died at his home on Washington Street in Rockport,Indiana April 20,1906.
In 1840 he emigrated with his parents to this country and settled for a few years two and a half miles from Rockport.
Later he conducted a cooper shop on the ground now occupied by Kitchen & Thompson's grocery store in North Rockport.
On August 5,1852 he was united in marriage with Barbara Romig, to which this union were born 11 children, three of whom are deceased. For 40 years he lived on his farm six miles north of town.
In the fall of 1904 he moved to Rockport where he has since lived.
Besides he aged widow there were left four sisters and one brother, also the following eight children, Mrs John Maurer and Geo H Schumacher living in Oakland CA, Christian Jr, Charles, Samuel, Mrs Elizabeth Freshley, Mrs William Jacobs, Mrs Charles Wilburn all living in and around Rockport.
The remains were laid to rest in Zoar Cemetery on Sunday April 22, the Rev G Koch of Huntingburg and the Rev John Mundor conducting the services.
