About Christoph Wilhelm Christian Friedrichs
Came to South Africa with the German Settlers in 1857 (German Legion) with his young wife, also 23, and was granted land in Kingwilliamstown. His wife bore him 7 boys and 2 girls and she died in 1870 when the youngest child was almost 2. George Friedrichs was her second son. Christian Friedrichs then married again in 1883 and they had another 6 girls and 3 boys. Christian was a tailor by trade but he then owned a double-storey department store selling clothes, groceries, books, toys and games which they imported from Germany..
