About Christopher Erskine, Sr.

CHRISTOPHER ERSKINE

Christopher Erskine is not the son of James Erskine of Grange, Lord Grange & Rachel Chiesley, Lady Grange & not the same as Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Erskine

A number of pedigrees published by MyHeritage claim that Charles Christopher Erskine, here treated, is the son of James Erskine of Grange, Lord Grange and his wife Rachel Chiesley, Lady Grange This is wrong. Lord Grange and his lady did have a son named Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Erskine but he died childless on 1 December 1776, at Edinburgh in Midlothian, Scotland. Charles Christopher Erskine, here treated, on the other hand, died on 19 April 1775, at Abington in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. It follows, therefore that he is not the same person as Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Erskine MyHeritage

Christopher Erskin (or Erskine) married 15 Oct 1729 in Bridgewater, Plymouth, Massachusetts to Susanna Robinson.

“Christopher came to America about 1725. He migrated from Ireland with his brother Robert.”

“Christopher was about 75 years old when the Revolutionary War started. He apparently had a very deep hatred for the British and when the first shots were fired at Lexington he was there and was shooting at the British. He never joined the Colonial Army (although his son Christopher Jr did). Christopher Sr was wounded at this first skirmish with the British and the wound ultimately lead to his death on 19 Apr 1775.”

“There is a suggestion that Christopher had changed his name from Charles when he arrived here in America to protect his family from British reprisals. This does fit with what was happening at that time.”

Unfounded Speculation by Find A Grave

His parentage is somewhat in question. It may be James Erskin and Lady Rachel Chiesley. They had fled Scotland to Ireland about the time of his birth. Due to a unfortunate law suit by some greedy descendant trying to claim right to the Earl of Mar, where Christopher probably descends, the genealogy line went "missing". The law suit did not succeed due to lack of evidence. It shouldn't have been allowed in the first place. That now clouds all of us who are trying to do a legitimate genealogy of our family lines and history.
