From Geni member Chris Smith , Oct 2015:

Ambrose Joshua Smith's line, in my opinion, is closely related to that of Smith/Snelson. ySearch.org matches this line to a "South Irish Modal Haplotype". More on this in a moment.***

Regarding Maj. Lawrence Smith's family (Smith/Townley, includes Smith/Broadribb), their family seat was Hill upon Briercliffe cum Extwistle. Burnley in Lancashire is also where the Townleys were from.

The Smith/Snelson and Smith/Townley lines are not related. The gentleman who derived/discovered the "South Irish Modal Haplotype" is a very respected researcher and his work is solid and accepted by the genetic genealogy community. You can review it yourself.

Here is the South Irish Modal haplotype: http://www.ysearch.org/search_view.asp?uid=&viewuid=3RA5C&p=0

Here is a page discussing the modal haplotypes present in Irish Type III. http://www.irishtype3dna.org/kennordtvedt.php

I have found that the Smith/Snelson line matches a Mauldin yDNA match and a Coker yDNA match. If you enter in the SmithsWorldWide Group R-M269-8 markers into ySearch.org's "Find Genetic Matches" system, you will see these. I believe solving where the Coker line comes from will add some insight to the Smith/Snelson early origins. The Mauldin name links them to a Christopher Smith who married Mary Mauldin.

We find in Tyler's Quarterly a reference to the Smith/Snelson family crest:***

A link, with the quote underneath:

https://books.google.com/books?id=HDMyAQAAMAAJ&pg=RA1-PA150&amp...

Quote: "John Snelson Smith married his first cousin, Martha Bickerton Lewis, daughter of Benjamin Lewis and Martha Bickerton. They were parents of Benjamin Lewis Smith, who married Ann Harris. Their son, John O. Smith, aged 70 years, lives at Beaver Dam, Hanover Co, VA. **There has been handed down to him a large silver spoon with a crest engraved upon it, a horse's head and neck with bridle on.**"

  • **Here we can find an example of an Irish Smith family crest that fits the description of the one belonging to Smith/Snelson.

Other heraldry websites will agree that this crest is uniquely Irish in origin and is also used by other Irish families such as O'Shaughnessy.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.
