The first Woodward to arrive in America (Virginia) was Christopher Woodward, the elder, in the ship Giftie, in 1618 at Jamestown.
In 1620 he is on record as working at Martin's Hundred (The Iron Works) and by 1623 was listed as dead.
He came as an expert in metals and was in charge of the Iron Mine which is commemorated as "Wood's Labor". During the great Indian Massacre of 1622, as many as 412 colonist were slain in a few hours on Good Friday morning.
The elder Christopher Woodward was at Martin's Hundred on the north side of the James River some distance below Jamestown; there 75 men, women and children were murdered and many horribly mutilated.
Christopher Woodward was listed as among the slain.
