About Cissie Bonini

Dr. Rafferty passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz, California on Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007. She is survived by six of her seven children: Julia Bonini, Barbara Bonini, Sheila Bonini, Griffin Bonini, Colin Bonini and Cissie Bonini; also her brother Michael Griffin Rafferty Jr., her mother Barbara Flaherty Rafferty, and her eight loving grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved son Charles Bonini and father Michael Griffin Rafferty, Sr. Cissie Rafferty was an extraordinary woman. She was strong, brilliant and determined while also exceedingly warm and compassionate. While raising seven children, she was one of the first women of her era to go back to school and complete her Bachelor's degree, Masters and PhD in History at Stanford University – all with honors and distinction. Many will remember the humor of her "Dear Mom" column in the Stanford Daily and her campaign for student body president running as 'Mom'. Prior to attending Stanford, she attended Carnegie Tech. after graduating from Mt. Lebanon HS (Pittsburgh) in 1955. After receiving her PhD, she went on to teach at Stanford, San Francisco State, UC Riverside and UC Santa Cruz. She will be remembered as an inspirational and charismatic teacher - both within and outside the classroom. For her many accomplishments, however, nothing stands out more than her boundless love for her children and grandchildren. Cissie loved art, music, literature, and was an avid scholar of life. She was an accomplished traveler, prolific knitter and wonderful cook. Her warmth, keen intellect, success in which she lived her life, legendary sense of humor and - most importantly – her love of laughter will never be lost to us. Friends may visit Wednesday, May 30th from 4-8 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Roller Hapgood & Tinney Funeral Home, 980 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto. Funeral Mass on Thursday, May 31st at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Rosary, 3233 Cowper St., Palo Alto. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 22555 Cristo Rey Drive, Los Altos.
