Clement Aldridge, III

21 Sept 1699: Motion of CLEM'T ARLEGE, probate to him of the last will of ELIZ. ARLEGE his wife, proved by Edw'd Barnes and Hugh Staten. [Northumberland County, VA, Court Orders, p. 66] .

Northumberland County Will proved on 20 Mar 1706 (not date of death). [NEED COPY OF WILL]

• 15 Oct 1701--Mary Sivillivant, servant to Clement Aldridge, haveing had a bastard child in the time of her service, it's ordered she serve her said Master for her said default one yeare and a halfe according to Law, her said Master in court haveing engaged to pay the fine. [Northumberland Co. Order Book 1699-1713, Part 1, 176]
• entry before 18 Mar 1703: CLEMENT ARLEGE and MARY his wife vs. JOHN CONWAY. [Northumberland County Court Orders p. 243]
• Clement Arledge, deed to Patrick Maley, 7 Jul 1703. 17.127 [Beverly Fleet, Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Vol. XIX, Northumbria Collectanea, 1645-1720 (Balt: GPC, 1971]

There is some discrepancy as to whom Mary was married prior to her marriage to Clement. She was certainly a busy woman when it came to marrying:

• Mary Arledge, wife of Clement, widow of John Donaldson, 7 Jul 1703. 17.127 [Beverly Fleet, Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Vol. XIX, Northumbria Collectanea, 1645-1720 (Balt: GPC, 1971] *HOWEVER*, another abstract says: CLEMENT ARLEDGE and MARY his wife Relict of DENNIS EYES who bequeathed in his last will a planatation to JOHN CONWAY and MARY entitle to her thirds of Dower and Conway to be summoned to the next Court [Northumberland County Court Orders, p. 257]
• Court [20 Mar? Entry before 21 Mar] 1705/6, page 372. Pet. of Mary Arledge, a Com. of Adm. to her on the Est. of her de'cd husband Clement Arledge, with will annexed.
• Court 23 Nov 1706, page 419. Capt. John Cralle vs. Jonathan Palfrey and Mary his wife late Mary Arledge Admx. of Clement Arledge dec'd, dismissed.
• Court 15 Aug 1711, page 747. Clement and Mary Arledge deed of sale to Patrick Malery. (**Question: Why is this sale dated 1711 AFTER Clement had died?)

"To all Christian people to whom these presents shall come Clement Arlidge Junior of th Parish of Bowtracy of the County of Northumberland and Elizabeth his wife ... know yee that Colonel John Symmons dyed seized of sixty acres of land in Cherry Point Neck in the County aforesaid Butting and bounding Southerly on the Creek and Swamp that parts of this said land from a tract of land formerly sould by John Symmons unto Henry Bogges Westerly on ye land of the said Bogges Northerly on the Land Sould by the sd John Symmonds unto Francis Little now in the possession of William Parker and Easterly on the Land of Thomas Matthews wch Said tract or parcel of Land after the decease of

the said John Symmons descended unto Elizabeth Sister and heir of the Said John the Said Elizabeth intermarryed wth William Bean by whom she had issue - Elizabeth wife of the Said Clement Arlidge and party to this deed and sole heir to said Elizabeth Bean and whereas the Said William Bean hath by virtue of his intermarriage wth the Said Elizabeth sister of the Said John Symmons by whom she had issue Elizabeth one of the parteys to this Deed hath an Estate for life in twenty acres of the sd Land as tennant by the curtesye of England and Susannah the now wife of John Lawrence had title and Estate for h er life as tennant in Dower in Twenty acres of the sd Land as Relict and widdow of the Said John Symmons ... 15th day of February Anno Dominy 1694/95.."

I checked Allred Family in America by Dr. Rulon C. Allred and found [page I-74, in the section written by Archibald F. Bennett] the following information about this Clement:

Clement's wife, Elizabeth [now we know it was Elizabeth Bean], died about 1699. Clement then married Mary [who had previously married John Donaldson and then Dennis Eyes prior to her marriage to Clement Aldridge, Jr. Then after her 3rd husband, Clement, died, she married Jonathan Palfrey, as her 4th husband].

Among the appraisers of the estate of Clement Aldridge/Arledge were John Laurence. Clement's will was destroyed in a fire. He has no known children. Had his will survived, we would have known one way or another, but it seems really strange that with two wives, he had no children. We may never know

(with a miracle, of course).

We now know that Clement Aldridge/Arledge's first wife was Elizabeth Bean, the daughter of William Bean and Elizabeth Symmons. Elizabeth Symmons was the sister of Colonel John Symmons whose widow, Susannah, married John Lawrence.

Now, if that isn't confusing enough....

John Allred left a will in 1792 in Randolph County, North Carolina. Among his heirs was a daughter, Elizabeth Horner, wife of William Horner. Three of their children married Russells. Among some documents discovered by the late Brenda Esslinger of Knoxville, TN, a descendant of Elizabeth Allred and William Horner are: DAR Membership application of Helen Young Bishop; Horner Legacy by Fredalene Horner; Russell Vertical File & Bean Vertical File, McClung Library, Knoxville, TN.

The Allen Papers at the McClung Library has the following on the Bean line:

Matthew Bains married Margaret Hatton at Lancaster Monthly Meeting in England. They sailed for America in 1687 on the ship Chester. Matthew, Margaret and two of their children (Thomas and Timothy) died at sea. Their surviving children, William and Eleanor, wanted to stay in America. William's children were: Joseph, Matthew, James, Timothy, Thomas (infant who died), William, Jacob, Elizabeth and Eleanor. They were all born in the early 1700s.

The International Genealogical Index (IGI) shows William and Elizabeth Bean in Northumberland County, Virginia, the ancestor of the Beans who married into the Russell family and then three times into the family of Elizabeth Allred and William Horner. So far this is probably not too clear, but I'll try to

clarify, but the this line migrates from Northumberland County, Virginia, to Pittsylvania and Halifax Counties, Virginia, and to North Carolina. This BEAN-RUSSELL group/family was involved in the Watauga Association.

William Russell and Elizabeth Bean had three children who married children of William Horner and Elizabeth Allred: Elizabeth Russell who married to John Horner, Jr.; Jemima Russell who married George Horner (this family went to Hickman and later Perry County, TN); Lewis R. Russell who married Elizabeth Horner (migrated to Arkansas). The wife, Elizabeth Bean, of William Russell, was the sister of Captain William Bean (who married George Russell's sister, Lydia). This Elizabeth Bean and William Bean were the children of William Bean who was born 1720, Northumberland County, Virginia.

For those who know of the connections to the LANE family (including Tidance Lane), I will add the following...John Allred (left a will in 1792) was the father of a woman named Elizabeth who married William Horner. Three of their children married RUSSELLs, all of whom were the children of George Russell and Elizabeth Bean. Elizabeth Bean was the sister of William Bean who was born in 1720 in Northumberland County, Virginia. These BEANs migrated to Pittsylvania and Halifax Counties, Virginia (just over the NC state line). Also connected to these families is Joseph Cloud who has children who married a BEAN and a RUSSELL, connected to the Northumberland family previously mentioned. One of

Joseph CLOUD's grandchildren (daughter of Isaac), Ruth Cloud, married John THRASHER. It is believed that William Allred (son of Thomas) was married to Elizabeth THRASHER.

There is also a connection to the Cloud and Lane families. Briefly, William Cloud married Sarah James. Their children were: Robert, John, Joseph (to follow), Jeremiah and Willliam. Joseph Cloud married Sarah Green (widow Moore). Their children were: Isaac (to follow), Joseph, Mary and Ann. Isaac Cloud's wife is not known. Their daughter, Elizabeth, married John Fuller Lane. John Fuller Lane and Elizabeth Cloud had the following children: 1) Dorcas Lane, md. Thomas Gresham & then Nathaniel Davis.

2)  Sarah Lane, md. Zachariah McCubbins 3)  Jemima Lane, md. John Ellis, Sr. 4)  Isaac Lane, md. Sarah Russell    ***** 5)  Tidence Lane, md. Ann Bean    ***** 6)  John Dutton Lane 7)  Rhoda Lane, md. Mr. Curry 8) Elizabeth Lane, md. Benjamin Shipley 9)  Samuel Lane, md. Elizabeth Hunt 10)  a daughter who md. Thomas Cunningham.  After John Fuller Lane, Elizabeth Cloud Lane married 2) John Crouch. The Cloud/Lane/Bean research was done by Brenda Esslinger prior to 1994.

The point: there is a connection between the daughter of John Allred (Elizabeth, wife of William Horner) and families from Northumberland County, Virginia. I am sure there is much more to be done. I am not trying to say that John Aldridge/Arledge was the ancestor of the Allreds of Orange and Randolph Counties, North Carolina, because I don't think this is the case; however, I still believe the Allreds of NC are related or descendants of the Northumberland family of Aldridge/Arledge, especially since a Henry Alred appeared there in 1694 as assignee of William Dickinson by his attorney, Richard Haynie [Thomas Hobson and Some of His Descendants, Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine, Vol. VIII, Richmond Press, Inc. Printers, Richmond, VA, 1927, pp. 128-129].
