Indianapolis Man , Held in Attempted Extortion Plot INDIANAPOLIS, Mar. 21.UP V. S. Department of Justice Agent arrested Clifford Frank Howson, 32 years old, today in connection with an alleged attempt at extortion against E. H. Nelson, secretary of the Lieber Brewing Company. Howson was taten to the Marion County Jail when he was unable to furnish $5,000 bond, fixed by U. S. Comr. Howard S. Young. He is charged with having sent a letter ot Nelson demanding $2,-600 and threatening bodily harm if Nelson did not comply. The letter said the money should be placed at a spot north of Indianapolis. Federal agents left a fake package at the place and when Howson came along, pushing a biiycle, they arrested him. Howson is the father of nine-months-old twin boys.

Extortionist Is Given Three Years in Leavenworth for Sending Threatening Letter to Former Muncie Man By United Press. INDIANAPOLIS, Ind, June 23. (U.R) Pleading guilty in district federal court to an extortion charge, Clifford Frank Howson, 32, Indianapolis, was sentenced today to three years in the federal peniteniary at Leavenworth, Kas. Howson was charged with sending a threatening letter through the mails demanding $2,500 from Earl Howard Nelson, Indianapolis secretary of a brewing corporation. Nelson formerly lived in Muncie. Howson was arrested in a trap set at a lonely country road where the letter directed the money be left.

MUNCIE MEN GIVEN SUSPENDED TERMS Federal Judge Lenient With Nickol and Giorgianni. Indianapolis, June 23 (JP) Penitentiary sentences ranging up to three years today were handed out by Judge Robert C. Baltzell in Federal Court agaiast twelve persons charged with violation of federal laws. Eighteen persons appeared before the judge and all but one pleaded guilty. Eugene Nickol and Pete Giorgianni, both of Muncie, and Jesse Gillmore, of Evansville, drew suspended sentences. Nickol and Giorgianni had pleaded guilty to stealing cigarets and tobacco from a box car and Gillmore to forging, the name of his stepfather, George Seitz, to a postal money order. Several Muncie citizens interceded for Nickol and Giorgianni. Extortion Note Writer Sentenced. Clifford Frank Howson, of Indianapolis, also was sentenced to three years on his plea of guilty to having written an extortion letter to a local brewery official, Earl H. Nelson, who formerly lived in Muncie. "I have no patience with cases of this type," Judge Baltzell said in sentencing Howson. The longest term was given Leon A. Smith, of Pittsboro, who was sentenced to three years, a $250 fine and the remainder of a two year sentence from which he was on parole when he stole an auto in Indianapolis and drove to Lizton where he took several blank postal money orders.

TUESDAY MORXIXG, JUNE 23, 1930. U. S." Jury Indicts 18 WRECK COSTS LIVES OF 2. MANURED EXTORTON $2,500 Attempt on Brewery Official Charged All Will Be Arraigned Today. Eighteen persons, Including an alleged extortionist, were indicted in fourteen true bills returned by the Federal grand jury in a one-day session yesterday. Clifford Frank Howson, 32 years old, 6320 Ferguson street, indicted for extortion, is alleged to have sent a threatening letter througn the mail demanding $2,500 from Karl Howard Nelson, 3419 North Pennsylvania street, secretary of the Licber Brew ing Corporation. The letter carried a newspaper clipping of the disappearance of an Eldinburg woman who was believed to have met with foul play and said: "This will happen to you unless you put up $2,500." Tushed Bicycle Near Spot. Instructions were given to assemble the money in SI, $5 and $10 bills, place it in a one-pound tobacco can and put it on a post on a country road near Eighty-sixth street. Department of Justice agents placed a can on the post and arrested Howson March 21 when he appeared there pushing a bicycle. He denied implication in the plot, but paper and ink similar to that of the extortion letter were found in his home. Howson and others, who were indicted on charges ranging from automobile theft to internal revenue and postal law violations, will be arraigned before Judge Robert C. Baltzell at 10 o'clock this morning in Federal Court. Accused of Money Order Theft. A wild spree in which Leon O. Smith of Pittsboro, a paroled convict, is charged with stealing an automobile at the Statohouse, driving it to Liztoa and stealing a package of blank money orders there, resulted in his indictment for violation of the postal laws. Hugh Chaney and Jesse Oillmore, both of Evansville, were indicted on similar charges. Chaney is charged with sending obscene photograpna through, the mails, and Gillmore is accused of forging the name of a relative on money orders. Charles H. Dixon of Evansville was charged with violation of the narcotic laws. Eugene Nickol and Pets Giorgi-anni. both of Muncie, were indicted for theft from interstate shipments. Otto Hufford of Rossville. who was arrested in Frankfort, and Chester Payton, Herman Smith and Hubert Glover, all of Mitchell, were indicted on counterfeiting charges. They are charged with making counterfeit, dimes and half dollars. Indictments charging possession of unlicensed stills were returned against John Taylor Johnson of Indianapolis and Grace Hawhee and Mary Hulley, both of Terre Haute. All cases were presented to the grand jury by Paul A. Ptistcr, assistant I'nited States district attorney. Judge Baltzell announced that the grand jury will be convened again in September.
