James Robertson, son of Matthew Robertson and grandson of James Robertson, was born in Augusta County, Va. Nov. 16, 1738, died in present Montgomery County Aug. 8, 1836 (or Dec. 25, 1835 -- Waddell). He married May 5, 1762 in Augusta County Margaret Poage, ninth child of Robert Poage and Elizabeth Preston, and shortly settled on the south side of Roanoke River, his home at the east end of what is now Elliston.

He was a subaltern officer of the frontier, 1763-1764, with apparent rank of captain in 1767, served in the Point Pleasant expedition in 1774 under Col. William Fleming and was made a lieutenant colonel in 1777 in the 5th Virginia Battalion of Continental Forces, being a lieutenant colonel of militia in Montgomery county and likely advanced to full colonel during the Revolution.
He was a justice of the peace in Augusta County prior to 1769, one of the first justices in old Botetourt County and so one of the first justices in Montgomery County when it was organized in 1777.
In 1797 he owned about a thousand acres of land in Montgomery County and three thousand acres in Shelby County, Ky, which he received as soldier bonus for long service in the Colonial Wars under King George, and which in turn descended to his children.
He and Margaret Poage had eight children all it seems, born in present Montgomery County, and listed here in order given in a letter he wrote to Hon. Zach Johnston of Lexington, Va. and dated Roanoke, Aug. 26, 1797.. From "The Descendants of Robert and John Poage" , page 287.
