About Col. John Elliott Hunt
John Elliot Hunt son of General Henry Jackson Hunt (1819-1889) and Mary Bethune Craig Hunt(1836-1911). Attended West Point and graduated in 1894. He was assigned to the 25th Regiment in the West. He married Alice Norvell in 1902, the daughter of Colonel Stevens Thompson Norvell and Sarah Elizabeth Proal Norvell, and granddaughter of US Senator John Norvell of Michigan.
About 1905 he was sent to the Phillippine Islands where he contracted possibly malaria and was returned to the United States to be hospitalized at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington DC. Upon his release, he was reassigned to Spokane Washington. In the 1920s, he was the commander of Ft Jay military prison on Governor's Island in New York City. There he became involved with a sensational case involving the escape of a prisoner and was subsequently tried by court marshal and acquitted.
