John Luttrell
- Lt. Colonel in the 9th NC Regiment - 1776-1778
- Lt. Colonel in the Chatham County Regiment of Militia - 1779-1781
- Colonel in the Chatham County Regiment of Militia - 1781
On 11/27/1776, John Luttrell was commissioned as a Lt. Colonel under Col. Edward Williams in the newly-created 9th NC Regiment on the Continental Line. This regiment took a very long time to recruit enough men to make a difference, but they finally marched northward and arrived in Pennsylvania during September. Lt. Col. John Luttrell was left behind in North Carolina to lead all recruiting for the NC Continental Line. On 1/10/1778, John Lutrell resigned his commission.
Sometime during 1779, John Luttrell was commissioned a Lt. Colonel under Col. Ambrose Ramsey in the Chatham County Regiment of Militia. Some references "hint" that he never rose above Lt. Colonel, but this Author leans towards him being promoted to full Colonel as described below.
During the 1Q of 1781 (probably just before the battle of Guilford Court House on 3/15/1781), John Luttrell was commissioned a full Colonel, alongside Col. Ambrose Ramsey, who had just been temporarily promoted to Brigadier General (Pro Tempore).
Col. John Luttrell led the Chatham County Regiment of Militia at the battles of Little Raft Swamp (9/1/1781) and at Lindley's Mill (9/13/1781), where he was killed in action.
John Luttrell was born c.1734 in Westmoreland County, VA, the son of John Luttrell and Katherine Sanford. In 1756, he served in the Prince William County Militia. In 1770, he was appointed a Clerk of the Crown in Hillsborough. John Luttrell married Susannah Hart, but they had no children. He and others, including Richard Henderson, founded the Transylvania Company in January of 1775 with the objective of founding a settlement in Kentucky. John Luttrell was elected to represent Chatham County in the House of Commons during 1779. He was killed on 9/13/1781 at the battle of Lindley's Mill in what is now Alamance County, NC.
