"Shepherdstown Register (West Virginia) Grandson of General Lee Dies Colonel Robert E. Lee, grandson of General Robert E. Lee, commander in chief of the Confederate armies, died last week at Virginia College, Roanoke, Va., following and illness of many months. He was 53 years old. Col. Lee became ill last March and went to Hot Springs, Va., to regain his health. He lingered between life and death for days and then rallied sufficiently to be brought to Roanoke in a private car. Since June he and Mrs. Lee have been visiting at Virginia College. At one time his recovery seemed probable, but due to the condition of his health little hope was entertained during the past month. Heart trouble was given as the cause of his death.
For many years Colonel and Mrs. Lee spent their summer at Virginia College. He was a son of the late Gen. W.H.F. Lee and was born in Petersurg, Va., After his graduation from the Episcopal High School at Alexandria he entered and graduated from Washington and Lee University, at Lexington.
He studied law and took up the practice of his profession in Washington, remaining there for several years. He was a member of the Virginia legislature several terms, having been sent from Ravensworth, the old Lee home in Fairfax county. Gov. Andrew J. Montague commissioned him a colonel on his staff.
At the time of his death he was a member of the board of trustees of both Washington and Lee University and the Episcopal High School. Colonel Lee made his home at Ravensworth. He lived there until his marriage in 1910 to Mary Middleton Pinckney, of Charleston, S.C. Since that time the couple have lived in Washington. He was connected with many civic and social organizations. He was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
The funeral was held last Saturday morning in the Episcopal Church at Lexington and interment was made in the Lee mausoleum at Washington and Lee University.
Besides his widow he is survived by his mother and one brother, Fr. George Bolling Lee, of New York. His death leaves Dr. Lee as the only male descendant of the Confederate chieftain."
