    • "Thompson Bird Lamar, son of L.Q.C. Lamar, Sr., listed his occupation as "gentleman" when he enlisted in the C.S.A. When the commanding officer of the 5th Fl. Inf. was wounded, he received a battlefield promotion, and took command. Shortly thereafter, he was shot off his horse by a Yankee sniper during the Siege of Petersburg.
