"James McDowell produced a Commisssion from the President and Master of the College of William and Mary, appointing him Surveyor of the County of Rockbridge, bearing the date the twenty-first day of M arch, 1778, was openly read; whereupon together with John Boweyer and Samuel McDowell, Gents, entered into and acknowledted their bond in the penalty of five hundred pounds with the condition require d by law; whereupon the said James McDowell took the oath required by law. Signed John Bowyer"

He was oldest son of John McDowell & Magdalena Woods and grandson of Ephraim McDowell & Margaret Irvine, immigrants. Children: Sarah, m. Major John McDowell, cousin; Elizabeth, m. David MdGa vock, 70; & James, m. Sarah Preston. There are three other children, names not known."
- Section Two: Descendants of David Cloyd, Immigrant #3, p.64. "John MdDowell married Magdelena Wood (sic), whose mother was a Campbell, and as tradition has it, of the noble family of Argyle. Mary, daughter of Ephraim marreid James Greenlee and James McDowell m arried Mary Greenlee, said to have been remotely descended from the Argyle Campbells .... James McDowell left no male issue, John McDowell has two sons, Samuel & James, and the latter married Elizabeth Cloyd, daughter of David Cloyd of 'Beverly Manor', whose wife was Margaret Campbell."
- Samuel McDowell of Jessamine County, Ky., deposes 26th July, 1808: "Was son of Magdalen; was Dr. McDowell; moved to Kentucky with his family in 1783. Andrew Reed was Samuel's son-in-law. Martha Harvey was only daughter of Benj. Borden, her sister Hanna having died infant a nd intestate . . . deceased. Benj. Borden, Jr., died April, 1753. Magdalen Bowyer and Mary Greenlee were sisters-in-law. . . ."
