About Conrad P. Newfang, III
Called Uncle Coon.
Conrad changed his family's last name to Newfang (from Neufang) around the time of WWI when feelings in America were running high against Germany. This caused some animosity with his siblings (according to Elinor Klein - whose grandfather was Conrad's brother Henry).
Alberta Neufang Rosebrugh's notes: "Conrad III ( later added initial P to his name). Also at the time of the first World War (1918) when feeling in America was running high against Germans - he changed the spelling of his family's name to Newfang to show he was an American. The other brothers did not follow his example. Caroline, Adolf Gustave (changed spelling to Adolph), Henry jacob, Juliana Caroline (changed to Julia), Lydia Elizabeth, Emilia Henretta (changed to Hattie), Dora Catherina, Carl Frederick (changed to Charles) 2 died in infancy."
From Obit:
"Conrad P. Newfang, a life-long and respected resident of Wayland, died at his home near Loon Lake Tuesday, aged 78. He had been in declining health for some time.
Mr. Newfang, who was engaged in farming during the greater part of his life, was a charter member of and first master of Wayland Grange.
Besides his wife, Cora Tripp Newfang, he is survived fy four children, Claude of Niagara Falls, Nina of Brooklyn, Leo of Wayland, and Ethel of Pelham. Another son, Harry, died in 1918 while in service in the navy during the World War.
Funeral services will be held at the home Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock and at 2:30 at the North Loon Lake church, Rev. E. W. Bittner officiating. Burial will be in the North Loon Lake cemetery."
