About Conrad Staley, Sr.
Conrad Staley, son of Johann Jacob Staley (1754 - 1811) and Marie Elizabeth House, was born January 1801 at Montgomery County, New York. In 1825 he married Hannah Trip (1801 Grand Island, Ontario Canada - 1834 Magnolia, Harrison, Iowa) in New York; they had five children. Conrad and Hannah Trip joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and joined the Saints on their westward migration.
In 1838, about four years after the death of Hannah Tripp, he married Hannah Johnson Wheaton Huffman, daughter of Abraham Johnson and Hannah Wheeler. She had been widowed twice, and had children from her previous marriages, as well as stepchildren. She and Conrad had four children prior to his death, possibly from yellow fever.
Conrad Staley, Sr., died in 1847 in Hancock County, Illinois and was buried at Harrison County, Iowa. Hannah Johnson Staley, now widowed for the third time, was a strong pioneer woman. She made the trek across the prairie with three young sons, John Staley and Conrad Hamel Staley, and their stepbrother, Henry W. Wheaton, arriving in 1852 in the David Wood Company.
