About Genl. Cornelis Hermanus Olivier
In the Free State, there is a small little town called Petrus Steyn and at the foot of the local Elandskop hill rests one of the Boer generals; Cornelis Hermanus Olivier.
He was one of the influential Boer kommandants and was also one of the delegates who signed the Peace Treaty of Vereeniging at Melrose House.
There is little info on his accounts during the ABW, but we now know that his commando won a decisive victory on 9th December 1889 against Major General Sir William Gatacre in the Northern Cape Colony and he was also very much involved at Groenkop battle with De wet and others.
He received the Dekoratie voor Trouwe Dienst and the Wound Ribbon (Lint voor Verwonding) for his services during the war.
After the surrender of General A.P. Cronj in 1900 he became a member of the Uitvoerende Raad (executive council) of the Orange Free State, in which capacity he served as a signatory of the Treaty of Vereeniging.
Genl. C.H. OLIVIER is in die plek van genl. A.P. Cronj tot lid van die Uitvoerende Raad gekies. Hy het ook die Vrede van Vereniging namens die Vrystaat onderteken.
