About Cornelius Van Dyke Posson
From "A Bit of Foliage from the Family Tree" by Cornelius F. Posson, 1916, writing about his grandfather:
On Monday morning, february 4, 1850, these grandparents of ours with their three small children (Edward, Nelson, and Catholine), the oldest 8 1/2 (Cornelius' father), started for the "Genesee country: in a bob-sleigh, to try their fortunes in the new country. Their route was to Spraker's Basin on the Erie Canal, and then along the tow-path of the canal. The trip consumed six days, they reaching the land which they had taken up, on Saturday afternoon. The home which they established just west of East Shelby, we all know well, and it was our delight in earlier years to be often there.
Cornelius died of cancer March 18, 1888, after much prolonged suffering which he patiently bore with Christian fortitude. Grandfather was married again on June 5, 1888, to Mahala Caldwell, and w ought not to forget, ever, the faithful, loving care with which she eased and cheered his declining years. She is still living at Millville, at the age of 81 (1916).
