About Cornelius Richardson Wheat : He was known as Uncle Cornelius to Carrie Lochhead. When he was growing old, he found he had few people to whom he could leave his wealth, as his elder sister predeceased him in 1883. It seems he was a bachelor so probably had no children. So he left a legacy of 500 dollars to Caroline Wheat Lochhead . She used it to educate herself, writing: " We have sixteen lectures a week besides all the other work which will increase from week to week, but I thought this was the best use I could put Uncle Cornelius' money to. It will about consume it by the time the year is finished and if Ned's poison (sic) ladened letters don't stop I may have to give up the attempt here."
