Philip Pettypool was born 13 March 1730 and baptized 9 December 1731, son of William and Frances Pettypool, according to the Bristol Parish Vestry Book, Prince George County, Virginia (1). He was not listed on the first tithe lists of Lunenburg County, 1748-1752, although he would have been of age. In fact, he is conspicuously absent from Lunenburg County, Virginia records. Phillip was a corporal in the militia of Edgecombe County, North Carolina during the French and Indian War, along with his brother Stephen Pettypool and with a second Phillip Pettypool, soldier. This second Phillip was likely as son of Phillip or Stephen, and for now, the assumption is he was a son of Stephen (2).

Phillip Pettypool was mentioned in Edgecombe County deeds as a son-in-law of Jacob Jones (3).

1753 August 10. Jacob Jones of Tar River in Edgecombe County to Philip Petty Pool, son-in law of sd Jones, for the love and affection he beareth of sd Philip, 200 acres on south side of Tar River, joining Webb, Wm King; witnesses: Aquilla Sugg, Wm Barrat, Jesse Flowers. August Court 1753, ordered to be registered.
