Layton served on the USS Oklahoma and was killed at Pearl Harbour, Hawaii, in the Japanese attack on the US fleet on Dec 7th, 1941. His body was never recovered. His family placed a memorial marker in the Banks family plot at Rowlett Creek Cemetery, near Allen, Texas.
