Ansel Smith enlisted Sept 1861 in Ionia and served in Co.E,1st Michigan Engineers & Mechanics during the Civil War. He was discharged Oct 1864 in Atlanta Georgia.
He was the son of Charles and Lucy (King). In 1865 he married Anna (Hoyt) Briggs. She was the widow of Henry R. Briggs and she and Henry had one daughter Nellie. Ansel and Anna were actually first cousins once removed. Anna's grandfather and Ansel great grandfather were Noah Hoyt.
Ansel and Anna lived in Wayland, a town in where her family was one of the founding families. They were in the Petosky census in 1880 with their four children, Julie Winefred, Rollin P., Estelle and Katharine Louise. Anna died in 1884 and the younger children were adopted by friends and Anna's relatives.
Ansel was hospitalized in Home for Disabled Soldiers in Los Angeles California. His daughter Katharine lived nearby in Redland. He died in Hiawatha Michigan while on leave from the hospital.
