About Cpl. Charles J. Herring, (USA)
On the eastern bank of the James River in Dickey County ND lies the lonely grave of soldier Charles Herring. Though he had had two wives and several children, none lie beside him. The individuals in the next generation are on the west coast or in New England.
All of his nearly grown children lived with him in North Dakota for a while in the '80s and early '90s
"F.2. Vt. Inf." < pension to Elizabeth (Lizzie née Filloon) filed in North Dakota on Nov. 9, 1896. "Lizzie" was George's second wife but had not been married to him during the War.
The injuries, sicknesses, and/or woulds that brought about his disability status are not known.

One of his children was born during the Civil War. After peace, Charles was in Vermont and had more children. His wife died in Vt and then he moved to the midwest where he met and married a widow, Mrs. Lizzie Rivers (Pilloon). A son stayed on in Vermont and was the progenitor of many Herring family descendants who live on there until this day (2018). George was in North Dakota briefly during the late 1880s. He 2nd child was born there.~• MMvB
