About Cynthia Florilla Payne (Chipman)
Cynthia Chipman born September 21, 1832 at Lewisburg, Ohio, departed this life November 24, 1924, age 92 years 2 months and three days, the daughter of Holton Chipman and Lucy B. Hopkins Chipman. She was the 5th granddaughter of Pilgrim John Howland. At the age of six years, the family moved to Bristol, Indiana, where she grew to womanhood, having no older brother, she assisted her father in his woolen mill until his death. She was married December 1, 1850, to Chauncey Smith Payne who was born in Newport, Campbell, County, Kentucky. To this union was born 8 children, four boys and four girls of which only two are still living, Hiram Payne of Kaw City, Oklahoma and Maggie Wilson of Oscar, Texas County, Missouri. It was with Maggie that she made her home for some 20 years, except while visiting other children. Mother Payne was a good Christian woman. Her mother before her was a very consecrated Christian woman and taught the right life by her deed and action. The same is true of the one just departed. She lived the worthwhile life always giving good advice and living up to the same. Just a few hours before death came she told friends and relatives just how she wanted to be dressed and put away and that she was ready to go. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Kerr of Licking, at the Boone Creek Church. The Subject used for the service was "Mother'. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved family and may Mother Payne's life be as a star that will guide many to the fold of God. W. M. Kerr In loving memory of our late friend, Mrs. Payne. Tis sad to part with mother, with sister, wife and daughter; But Oh! How sweet to know that some day we can meet, upon the golden street; What rejoicing there'll be, When in Heaven we shall meet; There'll be no more sad parting, No more sorrow there'll be; When we in Heaven met, His Gift; God thought to give the sweetest thing, In His Almighty power; To earth and deeply pondering what it should be one hour; In fondest joy and love of heart, Outweighing every other; He moved the gates of Heaven apart, And gave to Earth, A "Mother".
