About Dagmar Violet Palmer

Dagmar Violet Norby passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 24, 2001 surrounded by her family. Dagmar was born in Beatty, Saskatchewan on February 3, 1916, married Elmer Palmer in 1934. From that marriage, she had two children, Mae and Dixie. Elmer was killed overseas in 1944 and she later married Art Norby. June and Dale were the children of that marriage. Dagmar was a true pioneer, having been born on a farm in the West, traveling to the Yukon by train, stagecoach and dogsled to be with her husband who was working there, and later moving to Port Arthur with two young children whom she supported and raised alone until her second marriage. Dagmar was a gentle, caring, loving person who never lost her sense of humour or her spark for life, though she battled through many illnesses over the past twenty-five years. Her family was always the main focus of her life and they responded in turn by giving constant, loving devotion to her. She set an example of goodness and kindness for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that has now become her legacy to them.Dagmar was an active member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church and the Fellowship Club, both of which nurtured her strong faith. She was a longtime member of the Ladies' Auxiliary, Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 5, and the Women of the Moose, Chapter 1212. For many years, she laid the wreath representing Silver Cross recipients at the cenotaph on Remembrance Day; this was always a great privilege and honour for her as she had personally lived through the ravages and losses of war. She worked for many years as second cook and latterly as head cook for the Port Arthur Moose Lodge as well as giving many years of service in the various executive positions of the Women of the Moose. She worked tirelessly at teas and other functions for the Ladies Auxiliary Legion, WOTM, and her church. She is survived by three daughters: Mae Gommerman (Adam) of Calgary), presently here, Dixie Taber, and June Gaw (Roger) both of Thunder Bay, and one daughter-in-law Donna Norby of Calgary. Also surviving are grandchildren, Dixie Inman, Gayle Allison, of Calgary, Randy Taber, Alison Donaldson, Melissa Mallon, Laurie-Ann Mallon and Lindsay Gaw-Martin, all of Thunder Bay. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive in Saskatchewan and B.C. Dagmar was predeceased by her parents Jenny and Edward Hagglund, husbands Elmer and Arthur, brothers, Alfon, Atner, Gottner, Edner and Emil and sisters Andry, Astrid, Alfa and Mabel, grandson Stephen Gommerman in 1980, her only son, Dale in 1991, and her son-in-law, Walter Taber in 1996.Family and friends will gather at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church at the corner of River Street and Farrand Street on Monday, October 29th at 10:30 a.m. for services with Rev. Matthew Diegel officiating. Ladies Auxiliary of Port Arthur Branch #5 , Royal Canadian Legion will hold their service of tribute in conjunction with the funeral service. Interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens, following the luncheon at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 5, Van Norman Street. Friends may call at the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 North Court Street, Sunday, October 28th from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. with prayers beginning at 6 p.m. Ladies of the Moose Chapter 1212 will hold their service of tribute following the prayers on Sunday evening. Should friends desire, donations, in Dagmar's memory, may be made, and would be gratefully accepted by, Our Saviour's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, Branch 5 Royal Canadian Legion, or the Heart & Stroke Foundation."
