Biographical Summary

Marion Hamilton was the daughter of Sir Robert Hamilton, Lord Pressmennanm, and his wife Marion Denholm. She married Hon. Sir Hew Dalrymple of North Berwick, 1st Bt., son of James Dalrymple, 1st Viscount of Stair and Margaret Ross, on 12 March 1682.1

I. 1698. The Hon "Hew Dalrymple, of North Berwick," co. Haddington, yr. br. of Sir James Dalrymple, 1st Baronet [S. 1698], of Killooh abovenamed, being 3d s. of James, 1st Viscount Stair [S.] (d. 25 Nov. 1695), by Margaret, da. and heir of line of James Ross, of Balniel, co. Wigtoun, was 6. about 1653 ; Advocate, 23 Feb. 1677 ; was one of the Com- missaries of Edinburgh ; was Dean of the Faculty of Advocates, 1695-98 ; M.P. [S.] for New Galloway, 1696-1702, and for North Berwick, 1702-07, being one of the Commissioners to settle the Articles of the Union, and was cr. a, Baronet [S.], as above, 29 April 1698,( a ) with rem. " to heirs male of his body and their aires male for ever."( b ) He was made, 7 June 1698, Lord President of the Court of Session (an office which had been vacant nearly three years, since his father's death), and continued so till his death in 1737. He m. firstly, 12 March 1682, Marion, da. of Sir Robert Hamilton, of Presmennan, one of the Lords of Session. She was living June 1700. He m. secondly, in or before 1712, Elizabeth, widow of James Hamilton, of Bangour, co. Linlithgow, da. of John Hamilton, of Olivestob. [SIC] He d. 1 Feb. 1737, in his 85th year. His widow d. at Edinburgh, 21 March 1742, aged 67.
